A surgeon’s job is traditionally thought to be done by men, but this view is changing quickly. In the past, surgery required great physical strength, so most surgeons were male. However, the main responsibilities of a surgeon are not about strength but skill and knowledge. Surgeons examine patients, diagnose medical problems, perform operations, and take responsibility for patients’ recovery. They must work carefully and make quick, correct decisions, often under pressure. To do this job well, a person needs patience, concentration, confidence, and strong problem-solving skills. Good communication is also important so surgeons can explain procedures clearly to patients. Both men and women can become excellent surgeons because ability does not depend on gender. In fact, people benefit from having both male and female surgeons, as patients can feel more comfortable and receive care from different perspectives.
