In recent years, many young Vietnamese people have started celebrating festivals such as Christmas and Halloween. While some people worry that these foreign holidays may weaken traditional Vietnamese culture, I believe that celebrating them brings more benefits than harm.
Firstly, these festivals provide young people with opportunities to relax, have fun, and express creativity. For example, Halloween allows students to dress up, decorate, and enjoy parties, which helps reduce stress after school or work. Christmas, though not a traditional holiday in Vietnam, encourages people to share love and kindness, values that are universal and positive.
Secondly, joining global celebrations helps Vietnam become more open and integrated with the world. Experiencing different customs allows young people to understand other cultures better and develop a more global mindset — something essential in today’s interconnected world.
Of course, it is important to continue preserving Vietnamese traditions such as Tết and Mid-Autumn Festival. However, embracing new cultural events does not mean forgetting our own. In my opinion, celebrating both local and foreign festivals makes Vietnam’s culture richer and more diverse.
