Mount Everest is a famous mountain located on the border between Nepal and China, in the Himalayan mountains. It is 8,848 meters high, making it the highest point on Earth above sea level.
Everest is very special to the local people. They call it "Sagarmatha" in Nepalese and "Chomolungma" in Tibetan. Many people try to climb Everest; about 3,000 people have reached the top. The first climbers to reach the summit were Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal in 1953.
The best times to visit Mount Everest are from April to early June and from September to November, as the weather is better during these months.
To visit Everest, you can fly to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. From there, you travel to a town called Lukla, where you start hiking to Everest Base Camp. The hike to Base Camp takes around 14 days, with stops along the way to help you get used to the high altitude.
