Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth at 8,848 meters above sea level, is located on the border between Nepal and China within the Himalayas. Known locally as "Sagarmatha" in Nepali and "Chomolungma" in Tibetan, it is a sacred, majestic peak. First conquered in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, about 3,000 people have since reached the summit. The best time to visit is from April to early June or September to November for favorable weather. Tourists usually fly to Kathmandu, travel to Lukla, and spend about 14 days trekking to Base Camp, taking time for necessary acclimatization along the way.
