A surgeon’s work has been traditionally performed by men, but today more women are entering and excelling in the field. A surgeon’s primary role is to carry out surgeries to treat diseases, deformities, or injuries. That being said, when one learns to diagnose appropriately, plan surgeries meticulously, use instruments with finesse and care for patients afterwards, he or she will be well on their way! To perform this work well, surgeons require considerable medical knowledge and outstanding hand–eye co-ordination, as well as an aptitude for working under pressure. And they need to be patient and responsible and they must also be compassionate and calm, because their work directly affects patients’ lives. Both men and women can become surgeons, and having diversity in this profession benefits society as a whole.
