The line graph shows the urban and rural populations in Vietnam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the number of people living in cities increased steadily, while the rural population decreased.
In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in the countryside, making up about 85% of the total population. However, from 1960 to 1980, this figure dropped to 81%. It then stayed almost the same for the next ten years. Between 1990 and 2000, the percentage of people living in rural areas continued to fall gradually. By 2020, the rural population was only 63% of Vietnam’s total population.
In contrast, the urban population grew steadily over the same period. In 1960, only around 15% of people lived in cities. This number rose slightly in 1980 and stayed stable until 1990, when less than 20% of the population lived in urban areas. After 1990, the proportion of city residents increased step by step, reaching 37% of the total population in 2020.
