Overall, urban population in Viet Nam had an upward trend from 1960 to 2020, in contrast to urban trajectory, rural areas population witnessed an opposite trend. To be specific, throughout the period, number of people lived in countryside had dominated people who lived in cites.

In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas, accounting about 85% of the population. However, after two decades, the percentage of rural population saw a slight decrease at 80% in 1980. In addition, the proportion continue to declined gradually at 70% in 2010. From 2010 to 2020, although the rural population dropped steadily to 63%, it still represented the majority of the population.

By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, only 15% people lived in cities, which 6 times lower than the rural figure. This proportion increased moderately to 20% in 1990. Ten years later, its continued increased to30%, and then climbed gradually to 37% in 2001
