The line graph shows population trends in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the urban population has gone up and will continue to grow while the rural population tends to decrease and will continue to fall.
In 1960, 15% of Vietnamese population live in urban areas. This figure rose gradually in 1980 with 19% and more than 4% compared to 1960. By 1990, the proportion of Vietnamese population increased significantly and until 2010, the figure for urban population was double than that for 1960. The highest was 37% from the population of urban citizenships in 2020.
By contrast, the rural population fell throughout the same period. Regarding 1960, 85% of most of Vietnamese people live in rural areas. This figure went down slightly for 1980 and 1990 were 81% and 80% respectively. From 2010 onward, the percentage of rural residents plummeted to 63%.
