Regarding the year 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas. However, from 1960 to 1980, the percentage of rural population fell gradually to 81 percent. From 1990, this figure has slightly declined to 70 percent in 2010 and by 2020 the percentage of rural population was dropped to 63 percent.

By contrast, the urban population went up throughout the period. In 1960, the population of urban population was just roughly 15 percent. In 1980, it rose rapidly to 19 percent. Then, the figure experienced a surge to 37 percent in 2020.
