The line graph illustrates the changes in the urban and rural population in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the proportion of urban residents increased steadily, while the rural population experienced a gradual decline during the same period.
In 1960, only 15% of Vietnamese people lived in urban areas, compared to 85% living in rural regions. This gap remained large in 1980, when the urban population rose slightly to 20%, while the rural figure decreased to 80%. From 1990 onwards, the urban population grew more quickly. It reached around 30% in 1990 and continued to rise to 40% in 2010.
By 2020, the percentage of people living in urban areas climbed to 35%, although still much lower than the rural population.By contrast, the rural population fell steadily from 85% in 1960 to 65% in 2020.
