The line graph shows population trends in Viet Nam’s urban and rural areas over the 1960–2020 period.
Overall, the urban population underwent a steady increase has increased while the opposite pattern was observed in the graph for the rural population has decreased.
In 1960, 85 percent or most of Viet Nam’s population lived in rural areas. This figure fell sightly to 81 percent in 1980. The trend declined gradually to 80 percent in 1990. However, the percentage of rural population plummeted significantly to 70 percent in 2010. In the next ten years, this figure dropped sharply to 63 percent.
By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, the percentage of urban population was just around 15 percent. It increased slightly to 19 percent in 1980. In 1990, the figure rose gradually to 20 percent. After that, the trend went up drammatically to 30 percent in 2010. In the next ten years, the figure grew steadily to 37 percent.
