The line graph shows population trends in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the urban population increased consistently while the rural population saw a significant drop over the 60-year period.
In 1960, most Vietnamese people (85%) lived in the countryside. However, from 1960 to 1980, the percentage of rural dwellers slightly decreased from 85% to 81%. From 1990, this downward trend became much faster, falling sharply to 70% in 2010 before ending at 63% in 2020.
By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, the figure stood at only 15%. In 1980, it had grown to 19%. From 1990, the proportion of urban inhabitants grew rapidly, reaching 30% by 2010 and finally peaking at 37% in 2020. This clearly illustrates a strong movement towards urbanization in Viet Nam.
