In 1960, 85% or most of Viet Nam's population lived in rural areas from 1960 to 1980, the proportion of rural population fell slightly to 81%. However, this figure remained stable until 1990. After that, this figure went dropped dramatically to 63% in 2020.

By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, the percentage of urban population was just around 15%. It grown minimally to 19% after it remained the same from 1980 to 1990. Moreover, the figure soared rapidly and in 2010 it stood at 30%​​​​.
