The increasing trend of young Vietnamese people celebrating Western festivals like Christmas and Halloween has sparked significant debate. In my opinion, this cultural adoption is largely a positive development, provided it is approached with balance and discretion.
On the one hand, participating in international festivals demonstrates the integrative and open-minded spirit of the youth. It offers them an opportunity to learn about and experience new cultural dimensions, while also adding enjoyment and diversity to their social lives. These events often foster happiness, community bonding, and boost related business and service activities.
On the other hand, the concerns about the dilution of traditional culture are valid. If the younger generation becomes overly preoccupied with foreign festivals and consequently neglects or ignores Tết Nguyên Đán, Mid-Autumn Festival, or other Vietnamese customs, the national cultural identity could be weakened.
In conclusion, I believe cultural blending is inevitable in a globalized world. Instead of prohibiting this trend, we should encourage young people to embrace the positive aspects of foreign cultures while simultaneously strengthening education and appreciation for traditional Vietnamese values to ensure the national identity remains strong. Balance is the key.
