Topic 1: Describe a custom in your family

One special custom in my family is having a big meal together on the first day of Tet. Every year, all members of my family, including grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, gather at my grandparents’ house. Early in the morning, we help prepare traditional dishes such as bánh chưng, boiled chicken, spring rolls, and pickled onions. After everything is ready, we sit around the table and enjoy the meal together. During the meal, the adults give lucky money to the children and wish each other good health and happiness for the new year. This custom is very meaningful to me because it gives everyone a chance to spend time together, share stories, and strengthen family bonds. It also helps me feel connected to my culture and reminds me of the importance of family love.

One of my favorite street foods is pho, the famous Vietnamese noodle soup. Even though it’s often served in restaurants, you can find some of the best bowls at small street stalls early in the morning. The dish is made with flat rice noodles, a clear and fragrant broth, and either beef or chicken. What makes pho special is the way the broth is cooked for hours with spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cloves, giving it a deep, comforting flavor.

When you sit down at a street stall, you usually get a basket of fresh herbs—basil, mint, and bean sprouts—that you can add to your bowl. A squeeze of lime and a bit of chili sauce make it even more delicious. I love pho because it feels both light and filling at the same time. It warms you up, especially on cool mornings, and it’s something that brings people together, since many locals enjoy it as a daily breakfast.

For me, pho is more than just food—it’s a cultural experience. Eating it on the street, surrounded by the sounds of motorbikes and chatter, makes it taste even better. That’s why it’s one of my favorite street foods.

VII. Reorder the words to make complete sentences.

Customs and traditions play an important role in our family. We maintain our own customs and traditions to strengthen each member's sense of belonging.

(A)          Firstly, there is a custom of having a monthly camping trip in our family. The main purpose is to inspire a love of the great outdoors in our children. We've found our favourite campsite and returned there again and again. That's why we've built lots of special memories around that place.

(B)          Secondly, we have the tradition of hunting Easter eggs. Instead of leaving the Easter basket by their beds or in the living room, we create a fun hunt for them. We leave the first clue by their beds and they follow one clue to the next until they find their baskets. We have followed this tradition for generations and Easter has always been an awesome and memorable vacation.

(C)          By tradition, my family also celebrates Thanksgiving. The most interesting part is related to the Thankful Box. Family members are encouraged to write down a few things they are grateful for on paper and then place it in a decorated box. Later on, as the family eats dessert, the box is passed around the table for each person to pick up a note and read it aloud until the box is empty. It's so meaningful to hear heartfelt and sometimes humourous thank-you messages from family members.

No one is obliged to follow these family customs and traditions; we actually all fancy taking part in them because they make us closer as a family.

A. Read the text and decide in which paragraph each detail below is mentioned. Write A, B, or C in the blank.

1. A special occasion to express gratitude.                           ……………………………….. 2. A place that the family enjoys going to (many times).                        ……………………………….. 3. An activity happening while the family's eating.                          ……………………………….. 4. An activity of looking for something.                                            ………………………………..

5. An activity taking place every month.                                             ……………………………….. 6. A holiday full of unforgettable memories.                               ………………………………..

Last week we published an article that discussed why and how to establish family traditions. Traditions offer numerous benefits: they strengthen your family’s bonds, enrich the life you share together, contribute to your children’s well-being, and create lasting memories. For this reason, they form one of the three pillars of family culture.

Today we offer a list of over 60 specific family tradition ideas. You can incorporate some of these directly into your family, or use them as inspiration for creating your own traditions.

Before we get started, let’s cover a few things that will help ensure that your establishment of new traditions will be met with success:

While it’s tempting to go crazy with starting lots of traditions, shoot for quality over quantity. If you do a couple from within each category, you’re gold.
Choose traditions that most resonate with you. Having said that, as you review the list, try not to immediately write off some as silly or not elaborate enough. This isn’t only about what appeals to you as a jaded adult, but what will appeal to your kids. If you think back to your childhood, some surprisingly silly and simple stuff was a lot of fun and created great memories.
Traditions need to be practiced regularly to be effective. It’s easy to throw a tradition out the window when life gets busy and you’ve had a long day. Commit to the tradition and do your best to be as consistent as possible with it.
The ideas below come from The Book of New Family Traditions, from mine and Kate’s respective families, from our friends’ families, and from those we’ve come up with for our own family.

In my opinion, customs and traditions are very important for the Vietnamese life. Like other families, my family has our own customs and traditions. Firstly, there’s a custom in our family of children standing in a row to greet guests. It expresses respect to the guest from the host. Secondly we have the tradition of having lunch together on the second day of Tet. Everyone has to be there before 7 p.m to have the dinner and talk about the Tet holiday. Thirdly, It is the custom for my family to spend Sunday together. We usually go to supermarket or go for a picnic. Sometimes, my family celebrates grilled party. We all enjoy this customs and traditions because they provide our family with sense of belonging. Moreover, it makes us closer as a family and help make life better.

The culture of Vietnam is one of the oldest in Southeast Asia, with the ancient Bronze age Dong Son culture being widely considered one of its most important progenitors. Some elements generally considered to be characteristic of Vietnamese culture include ancestor veneration, respect for community and family values, handicrafts and manual labour, and devotion to study. Important symbols present in Vietnamese culture, include dragons, turtles, lotuses and bamboo. Vietnamese cuisine is extremely diverse, often divided into three main categories, each pertaining to Vietnam's three main regions (north, central and south).Among the traditional holidays, the two most important and widely celebrated are the Lunar new year , followed by the Mid-autumn lantern festival , although the latter has been losing ground in recent years.
