1. Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm (1491 – 1585) was a respected Vietnamese figure who served as an administrator, teacher, poet, and sage. He is referred to by several names: Hanh Phủ, Bạch Vân am cư sĩ (White Cloud Hermit) and Trạng Trình.
2. Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm was born on the coast in Cổ Am village. He got the teaching from the second-rank doctor Lương Đắc Bằng and passed the official government examination in 1535, ranking number one in the country. This was a period of great instability in Vietnam which may explain the reason why he took the exam at such a late age. He served in the Mạc Dynasty court for just seven years until 1542 when he resigned after his official complaints about royal court corruption were ignored.
3. He then returned to his hometown and founded a school. As an educator, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm was ahead of his time. He welcomed students from all social classes, breaking the norms of a society that favoured the elite. Among his students were the diplomat Phùng Khắc Khoan and the author Nguyễn Dữ.
4. Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm became a person much sought after by many leaders during a period of civil war and political change, including the fall of the Mạc Dynasty and the rise of the Trịnh and Nguyễn Lords. He advised Trịnh Kiểm to be the power behind the Lê Dynasty and suggested Nguyễn Hoàng establish control in the undeveloped south. These strategies led to a division of Vietnam that lasted for 200 years. As a result of this sage advice, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm gained a reputation as someone who could foretell the future.
