How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia.
Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes people have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of the water, snake leaving their holes and other animals acting strangely.
After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water and medical supplies. The amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depend on types of building, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes on the earth each year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths.

A. the population is large B. pieces of the earth’s surface meet

Vietnam usually has a dozen storms every year from June through the end of November, and most of which occur in the Central and northern provinces. November 2nd, 1997, however, was an unexpected day when the major storm Linda raged in the South. Linda was the worst typhoon in Southern Vietnam over 100 years. Formed in the sea of the Philippines, Linda strengthened as it moved westward. Later, it struck extreme Southern Vietnam with winds of 100 kilometres an hour. Over 3000 people were reported lost and died. Ca Mau province, suffered a direct hit by the storm, had the most damage. Gusts and heavy rainfalls caused flooding, destroyed crops, damaged about 200,000 houses and left about 383,000 people homeless. Linda later struck Thailand, causing flash flooding and at least 164 deaths. The storm also affected Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia to a lesser degree.

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a God . Other people thought it was just a light in the sky . And others thought it was a big ball of cheese .
Then telecopes were made .And men saw that the moon was really another world . They wondered what it was like . They dreamed of going there .
On July 20 , 1969 , that dream came true . Two American men landed on the moon . Their names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin .
The first thing the men was that the moon is covered with dust . The dust is so thick that the men left footprints where they walked . Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the moon . And they could stay there for years and years . There is no wind or rain to wipe them off .
The two men walked on the moon for hours . They picked up rocks to bring back to us for study . They dug up dirt to bring back . They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know . Then they climbed back into their moon landing craft .
Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon . They joined Micheal Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon . Then they were off on their long trip back to earth .
Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon . They left the machines they had set up . And they left footprints that may last forever .
