Today, most people no longer believe in ghosts and witches. But these supernatural beings are still a part of Halloween. The colours black and orange is the colour of pumpkins. A jack-o’-lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side. Candles are usually placed inside, giving the face of ghostly glow. According to legend, jack-o’-lantern protects people in their homes from ghostly spirits.

Dressing in masks and costumes is a popular Halloween activity. Costumes can be traditional and scary, such as a witch’s pointy hat and black gown. Costumes may also have modern flavour. Many children dress up as movie characters or a favourite superhero. But Halloween is not just for children. Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties.

All night long, people dance and sing. In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the streets the night before, are placed into the water when the festival is over. Thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to sea guiding the dead on their return journey to the other world. This is a moving spectacle, for crowds of people stand on the shore watching the lanterns drifting away until they can be seen no more.
