Thực ra múa lân và múa sư tử thường bị gọi nhầm, nhưng về nguồn gốc thì khác nhau:

• Múa lân: Con lân là linh vật trong văn hoá Á Đông (cùng với long, quy, phụng). Đầu lân thường có sừng, hình dáng cách điệu, mang ý nghĩa may mắn – thường thấy trong Tết Trung Thu ở Việt Nam.
• Múa sư tử: Bắt nguồn từ Trung Quốc, mô phỏng con sư tử thật (không có sừng). Có hai loại phổ biến: sư tử phương Bắc và sư tử phương Nam.

Ở Việt Nam, nhiều người quen gọi chung là “múa lân”, nhưng trong biểu diễn chuyên nghiệp thì đó thường là múa sư tử (đặc biệt là sư tử Nam).

Vì vậy, họ nói đó là múa sư tử chứ không phải múa lân là do đang phân biệt đúng theo tên gọi và đặc điểm của linh vật.
