I love living in London, my home city. It’s noisy and overcrowded, but (1) ………………… in the world is there such a large variety of things to do. (2) ………………… I leave the city, and normally (3) ………………… circumstances would I consider spending much time in the countryside. However, when an old friend unexpectedly rang me and invited me to stay at his house in rural Oxfordshire for a few days, I decided to go. It had been a long, hot summer, and (4) ………………… was I fed up with the continuous heat, but also with the crowds of people everywhere. (5) ………………… I realise how much my life was about to change. The next day, I took a train from Paddington station to Oxford. (6) ………………… had the train left the suburbs and started heading out into the countryside than my spirits began to lift. From Oxford, I caught a bus to the village of Hamley Crossing, where my friend lived. However, I didn’t get that far. A few miles out of Oxford, the bus stopped to pick up some passengers. I glanced out of the window and (7) ………………… a hillside overlooking the countryside stood a small cottage. It was surrounded by trees and fields, and looked really peaceful and welcoming. (8) ………………… had I seen such a beautiful place. I must have been under some sort of hypnotic spell, because (9) ………………… I heard the sound of birds singing and felt the breeze in my hair I did realise that I had got off the bus and was walking towards the cottage. It was as if I was being magically drawn to the place. I absolutely had to see it close up, and (10) ………………… time did I consider my friend who would be waiting to meet me in Hamley Crossing
