Chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang tường thuật (gián tiếp) bao gồm 4 bước chính: lùi thì của động từ, thay đổi đại từ (ngôi), đổi từ chỉ thời gian/nơi chốn và chọn động từ tường thuật phù hợp. Nếu câu tường thuật ở quá khứ (said, told), bắt buộc phải lùi thì.
Ví dụ:
Trực tiếp: "I am going to the cinema now," she said.
Tường thuật: She said (that) she was going to the cinema then. (lùi thì, đổi ngôi).
