Environmental Impact of Tourism

Although tourism is often called 'the smokeless industry', or an environmentally-friendly industry, it can actually damage nature. However, different kinds of tourism may have different effects on the environment.

• Mass tourism is a kind of tourism which involves tens of thousands of people crowding the same places at the same time of year. It often has a lot of negative impact on the local area, such as litter from tourists and pollution from traffic.

• Ecotourism provides tourists with opportunities to explore nature, and at the same time helps protect the environment and educates travellers on local environmental issues. It also promotes tourists' respect for local communities.

• Sustainable tourism involves not only environmental protection and cultural respect, but also efforts to keep profits local. It often refers to actions of the tourist industry as a whole.

• Responsible tourism encourages tourists to be more than visitors. Responsible tourists should not only be aware of their role, but also take part in protecting the environment, culture and improving the profits for local people. Responsible tourism often relates to specific actions of individuals, businesses, and communities.

Speaker 1. I love the UK. I just love the atmosphere, the culture, the art, the history. There is also beautiful scenery in places like Cornwall and Scotland. The people here are kind and friendly. The only things I don't like about the UK are the weather and the food. I had some really bad fish and chips recently!

Speaker 2. British people don't care about their work like we do. They aren't very hard-working really - they spend all day waiting to finish work and go home! And when they leave work, they forget about it. I have my own café here in Cardiff and for me, my work is my life.

Speaker 3. I find British people very friendly and I love an English breakfast and fish and chips. But I don't like it when I finish work at 11 p.m. or midnight, and young people are causing trouble in the street. It's not always nice and they make a lot of noise. I don't worry for me but I'm anxious for my wife at night over here. Overall though I like living in Britain. It's much better than back home.

Speaker 4. OK, the weather definitely is not great but I love the freedom of living in the UK. It's so friendly and welcoming. It was difficult for me when I first arrived at the age of sixteen. I was used to rules. My family came first and I always obeyed my parents. I never answered back. But British teenagers have so much more freedom. They don't have many rules, and that's not always a good thing. They often behave badly.

Nam’s father: You should focus on each problem, explain the main causes of it, and the suggest the solutions.

Nam: Thanks, Dad. But presenting all the solutions will be hard.

Nam’s father: Have you asked your teacher for advice?

Nam: Yes, I have. She advised that I should start with small, practical actions to protect the environment before coming up with big ideas that need a lot of effort or money to succeed.

Nam’s father: Sounds good. You’d better follow her advice. When did she ask you to present it?

Nam: She said I should present it the following week.
