a. Ryan: Oh, my mistake, I honestly thought all cardboard could be recycled.
b. Emma: Not if it's covered in oil; food contamination ruins the whole batch, so it must go in the general rubbish.
c. Emma: Wait a second, you can't put that greasy pizza box into the recycling bin!
a. Alice: That's a great habit, as air-drying clothes definitely helps reduce our household electricity consumption.
b. Tom: No, I'm hanging them outside on the line since the sun is shining today.
c. Alice: Are you really not going to put those thick wet towels in the tumble dryer?
a. Chloe: Exactly! All this plastic is just going to end up in a landfill.
b. Chloe: I'll do that right now, maybe if enough customers complain, they will actually listen.
c. Chloe: I can't believe how much bubble wrap came with this tiny USB drive I ordered.
d. Sam: You should write a review and suggest they switch to recyclable cardboard boxes.
e. Sam: It's ridiculous, isn't it? Online retailers use way too much packaging nowadays.

b. Olivia: Plus, having one less car on the road means less air pollution in the city centre.
c. Harry: Perfect. Let's start on Monday, and we can take turns driving every other week.
d. Harry: Petrol prices have gone up again this week. Driving to work is becoming too expensive.
e. Harry: That's a brilliant idea! It'd halve our fuel costs instantly.
a. Daniel: That's the problem with cheap fast fashion; the quality is always terrible.
b. Daniel: They cost more upfront, but they last for years, so you actually save money eventually.
c. Emily: I know, but the sustainable brands are just so expensive in comparison.
d. Emily: Fair point. I'll try to invest in a better pair next time instead of buying cheap ones.
e. Emily: I just bought these trainers two months ago, and the soles are already falling apart.
THE AFTERLIFE OF A T-SHIRT
1. When you throw an old cotton T-shirt into the household bin, it is incredibly easy to think its journey has permanently ended. However, this simple act of disposal is merely the beginning of a complex and ongoing environmental crisis. Every year, millions of tonnes of clothing are carelessly thrown away globally. This huge waste happens because the fast-fashion industry consistently favours cheap, seasonal trends over lasting quality and careful craftsmanship.
2. The vast majority of these discarded garments head straight to overflowing landfills or huge incinerators. As a natural cotton T-shirt rots under heavy piles of rubbish, it generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is very harmful to our climate. If the fabric contains synthetic fibres like polyester, the situation gets much worse. These artificial materials can take hundreds of years to break down completely, silently shedding toxic microplastics into the surrounding soil and groundwater.
3. Many individuals try to avoid this fate by giving their old clothes to charity shops, firmly believing they are making an eco-friendly choice. Although donating seems like a wonderful solution, a significant portion of this clothing is ultimately exported to developing nations. There, it often overwhelms local markets and ends up in massive dumps. Furthermore, domestic recycling programmes face major challenges because mixed fabrics are notoriously difficult to separate. Consequently, most recycled clothing is just turned into basic industrial rags.
4. To truly fix this worsening problem, a fundamental shift in our daily shopping habits is urgently required. We must transition towards a circular economy, prioritising the purchase of fewer items that are specially designed for longevity. By diligently repairing damaged clothes and actively supporting brands that embrace transparent, sustainable practices, consumers can finally break the vicious cycle of disposable fashion.
