1. In the 1740s, Jean-Antoine Nollet, a French scientist, discovered that electricity moved quickly along a wire, almost instantly. For years, scientists tried to use this idea to send electrical messages but did not succeed. Eventually, the French abandoned this effort and, in 1794, created the French State Telegraph. This system used telescopes in towers to send visual signals, faster than messengers on horseback. [I] Additionally, it only worked in clear daylight, limiting its use compared to the electrical systems later developed.

2. Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor from New England, moved to New York City in the 1820s. Like many others, he became deeply interested in the concept of an electrical telegraph. [II] In 1832, after returning from a trip to Europe, he began working on designs. Initially working alone, he later partnered with two important individuals. One, Leonard Gale, a chemistry professor at NYU, advised Morse to use several small batteries along the wire, instead of one large battery, to ensure the signal could travel long distances. Alfred Vail, his business partner, helped develop Morse code, using dots and dashes to represent letters and numbers.

3. In addition to developing Morse code, Samuel Morse also designed the necessary equipment to send and receive signals. [III] In 1838, he and his team successfully transmitted a message over two miles near Morristown, New Jersey. By 1844, Morse sent the famous phrase, "What hath God wrought," from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore. By 1850, approximately 12,000 miles of telegraph lines were in operation, replacing the need for messengers on horseback.

4. In England, William Fothergill Cooke and Charles Wheatstone designed their own workable telegraph, with its own language. [IV] But Morse code dominated and became the accepted international language of telegraphy. It was the ancestor of modern computer code, using dots and dashes the way computer software uses 1s and 0s to transmit data.
