The best way to reduce food waste is to manage it at the place where it is produced and sold. Industries can use advanced technology to improve their inventory systems. These systems include sensors, reference ID tags, and data analysis to track stock levels in real time. (1) _______.

An example of this is Shelf Engine, an app created in Seattle by Stefan Kalb in 2016. It aims to reduce food waste in grocery stores by using smart inventory systems. Shelf Engine uses machine learning and artificial intelligence (2) _______.

The app collects five types of data: sales figures, planned discounts, shipping information, and other factors such as weather, school calendars, and public holidays. The fifth data stream comes from teams across the country (3) _______. Shelf Engine uses this data to make predictions about demand. For instance, they can predict (4) _______. With this information, grocery stores can adjust their orders and avoid overstocking, which often leads to food waste. (5) _______.

1. Human actions are causing major changes to the environment, which makes diseases spread more easily. A study of almost 1,000 scientific papers has shown a strong link between human activities and public health. The research, published in the journal Nature, suggests that human-driven environmental changes are increasing the risk of infectious diseases.

2. The study examined five key factors that are altering the planet: biodiversity decline, climate change, habitat loss, chemical pollution, and the spread of non-native species. Researchers analyzed almost 3,000 data points to understand how these factors impact disease transmission. They discovered that four of these factors—climate change, pollution, non-native species, and biodiversity decline—are associated with an increased risk of diseases, with biodiversity loss being the most significant.

3. In areas where human activities have reduced biodiversity, disease and death rates are almost nine times higher than natural levels. This is because of the "dilution effect," where common species help diseases spread, and the loss of rare species makes infections more likely. For example, the white-footed mouse, which carries Lyme disease, has become more common, increasing cases in the U.S.

4. Interestingly, habitat loss in cities has been shown to reduce the chances of disease outbreaks. In cities, sanitation is better, and there are fewer species, which lowers the chances of disease spreading. This makes urban areas less likely to see diseases spill over.

5. Deforestation continues to be a significant threat for the spread of diseases. Clearing forests can allow diseases such as malaria and Ebola to spread more rapidly. Additionally, as the climate warms and ice melts, ancient germs from the Arctic might be released. Habitat loss and climate change could also force animals to gather closer, raising the risk of disease transmission.

A total of 1,000 medicine cabinets, stocked with essential items such as bandages, gauze, fever reducers, pain relievers, anti-diarrheal medications, and other necessary supplies, are provided to kindergartens and primary schools in remote mountainous and ethnic minority regions to enhance healthcare access for children. Dr. Mai Xuan Phuong, the former Deputy Head of the Communication and Education Department at the General Office for Population and Family Planning, explained that underdeveloped infrastructure, cultural traditions, and poor socio-economic conditions are the main reasons why healthcare is not easily accessible in these communities, especially for children. [II] He shared these insights during the launch of the "Medicine Cabinet for Children" charity project on May 24th.

3. A 2021 report by the United Nations reveals that the under-five mortality rate in Vietnam is still high, with approximately 19 deaths per 1,000 children under the age of five. [III] This rate is much higher than in other countries, such as Thailand, where the rate is 8, and developed countries where it is only 1-2 deaths per 1,000 children.

4. Dr. Phuong also pointed out that a lack of medical staff, proper facilities, and equipment, as well as poor sanitation, make it difficult for children to receive basic healthcare, such as necessary medicine. [IV] Therefore, raising public awareness and providing healthcare services directly in villages is essential.

5. Ms. Nguyen Thu Thao, a representative of the project, noted that only 25% of students receive primary healthcare at school. Many remote schools lack medical equipment, and some do not have a medicine cabinet. Teachers in these areas often have to travel long distances to get medicine for sick students. The project began in Ha Giang with 20 medicine cabinets and plans to expand to more schools across the country. Over 200 schools have already requested cabinets, and 300 more are expected to be delivered this year.
