English is often considered to be the international language of science. It proves to become an effective tool through time in communication, documentation and sharing of discoveries and inventions.
In communication, the use of English helps to promote international cooperation and aims to encourage significant scientific advancements. English enables scientists, engineers, explorers and inventors worldwide to think of new ideas and share their findings.
For information storage and sharing, scientists like using English to document and share the knowledge of inventions and discoveries, creating easy access to the development of various fields. As a result, original or translated scientific publications have reached the masses easily. Isaac Newton's law of gravitation, Thomas Edison's key inventions including the light bulb and recorded sound are typical examples. The North American Odyssey was Dave's and Amy's longest trip. They wanted to use this journey to encourage people to protect North America's waterways and wild places. Also, they wanted to teach schoolchildren about these wild areas. Therefore, they ran the Wilderness Classroom, an online platform where schoolchildren could follow their trips and learn from their experience.
They made the Wilderness Classroom interactive and fun by posting videos every week and online updates every Monday. Students could help them make decisions about the trip by doing surveys and suggesting routes they should take.
On April 22nd, 2010, they started their journey on their kayaks north out of Seattle. They spent the next three years kayaking, canoeing and dogsledding across the Northwest Territories, through the Great Lakes, and down the East Coast.
On April 4th, 2013, they continued their journey to Key West of Florida, completing their North American Odyssey. Since then, they have been going on other adventures and sharing their experience with school children. For Dave, raising kids' awareness of the wild is “a first stepping stone” to make people understand how important to conserve wild areas. As a result, people will join hands to make our planet more sustainable.
